Double Celebration as Student Meets Queen Drummer Idol

A Plymouth University graduate had a double cause for celebration when he picked up his degree certificate and got to meet one of his idols.

Jonathan Brough was just 19 and in Canada training to be a skiing instructor when he was diagnosed with meningitis and left paralysed from the neck down.

But the student, from Gloucestershire, has since fulfilled his dream of pursuing his studies and has just completed a BA (Hons) Media Arts degree at Plymouth University.

He collected his degree certificate during a ceremony on Plymouth Hoe and, as if that wasn’t enough cause for celebration, Jonathan – a huge fan of Queen – got to meet the band’s legendary drummer Roger Taylor, who was also attending the ceremony.

The Cornish-born musician and rock megastar was made an Honorary Doctor of Music by Plymouth University in recognition of his incredible career, which began when he joined The Reaction in Cornwall in the 1960s and has since seen him become one of the most successful performers and songwriters of his generation.
