Kendal Drummer Plan 48 Hour Charity Drumathon

A Kendal drummer is taking on the mammoth task of playing for 48 hours non stop for a local cancer charity that supported him through testicular cancer.

Professional drummer, John Powney, is taking on a huge challenge as he attempts to drum for 48 consecutive hours at the Bootleggers Bar in Kendal next month.

Having successfully completed his first ever 24 hour Drumathon back in 2012 John has decided to double the challenge this year. “This time I wanted to push myself further and give something back to CancerCare to help anyone who finds themselves in a similar position”

John was diagnosed with testicular cancer 6 years ago. “It was a real shock. I went to CancerCare for professional counselling, which really helped me. Having a place to talk with people who really understood was so important.”

John has been drumming for over 20 years and he also teaches in local schools and colleges.

“The amazing thing about the Drumathon is that we’ve already got 30 bands confirmed who will be coming down to join me and I’m proud to say that some of my drumming students will be playing with me too. It will be a team effort!”

John was accompanied throughout the 24 hour drumathon by his best friend and sound engineer Chris Edgar. “It was tough going last time but with support we both made it through and raised money and awareness for this great charity.”

Like anyone taking on such a challenge the training is crucial. John is drumming everyday with sessions lasting up to 12 hours as the drumathon draws closer.

“What will keep me going will be the support of Chris and the other musicians. Knowing that they have given up their time to come and support me is amazing.”

John’s 48 Hour Drumathon starts at 5pm on Tuesday 6 May at Bootleggers Bar on Finkle Street in Kendal. You can follow John’s progress on his Facebook page ‘48 Drumathon’ and sponsor him at www.justgiving.com/48hourdrumathon.
