New online music degree is a first

What is being billed as the UK and Europe’s first online music degree has just launched, backed by the founders of the Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM).

The degree, which has been created by British company E-MU, will offer music students the chance to study for a full Bachelor of Arts (BA) in music for what the organisers say will be as little as £3,500 a year. The degrees cover guitar, songwriting and music management and will cost a total of £9,000 for a full-time, two-year course or it can be studied part-time over four years.

Students will receive one-on-one tuition from tutors who include professional musicians, songwriters and managers. The first courses start in September next year.

The degree is being run in partnership with the University of Falmouth and comes from BIMM founders Kevin Nixon, Bruce Dickinson and Sarah Clayman.

Nixon said: “If you look at today’s top talent, a huge number of them have found success following quality music education. But the next generation of professional musicians are faced with academic choices they might not want, and prices they can’t pay.

“E-MU provides the alternative – an affordable degree gained through world class, online tuition. The future of music is digital and so is the future of music education.”
