The Charlatans’ Late Drummer Jon Brookes to Play on Band’s New Album
The Charlatans have confirmed that drummer Jon Brookes, who died in August, will appear on their next studio album.
Brookes passed away at the age of 44 after contracting brain cancer for the second time, but frontman Tim Burgess told Phil Williams on BBC Radio 5 Live that the band would use recordings left by Brookes on their upcoming songs.
“We just had the idea of sitting in one room as the four of us now,” Burgess said.
“We have got one song and we think that it is fantastic and that to me is the starting point and it is the first time we have really agreed on a song completely in quite a long time.”
He added: “This particular one can feature Jon’s drumming, he has left us a lot and we can piece together a few things.
“The album will feature Jon, even songs that aren’t written will include Jon in the writing. He’s just going to be part of it.”
The as-yet-unnamed album will be The Charlatans’ 12th and the follow-up to 2010’s Who We Touch.
The band’s first keyboard player Rob Collins died in a car accident in 1996, during the recording of the band’s fifth album Tellin’ Stories.
