Jefferson Airplane drummer Joey Covington has died in a car crash at the age of 67.
It’s been confirmed that he was driving in Palm Springs, California when he car left the road and drove head-on into a wall without wearing a seatbelt. Onlookers say he did not appear to hit the brakes before the impact. One witness attempted CPR but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Covington taught himself to play drums at the age of 10, and founded the band Hot Tuna with musicians who went on to form Jefferson Airplane. When the latter band’s career took off, he replaced their drummer and performed on three of their studio albums, and is best known for writing and singing “Pretty As You Feel” from their 1971’s “Bark.”
He then left the band in 1972 to chase a solo career, but he faded from the limelight and it took another collaboration with Jefferson Airplane to reemerge.
Covington spent his later years as a dedicated Palm Springs resident who played free gigs at any opportunity. His last appearance was at a Marilyn Monroe celebration on June 1.
